Detroit Dark Red Beet Seeds

The most popular beet variety on the market – ‘Detroit Dark Red’. Tender and delicious, these 2 1/2″ – 3″ deep crimson beets do not get woody as do smaller varieties if left to grow large. Perfect for canning, pickling, and eating fresh. The greens rival chard and spinach for tenderness and flavor, and are very nutritious.  Great for canning, and fresh eating.

Name:  Beets ‘Detroit Dark Red’

Botanical Name:  Beta vulgaris

Days to Maturity:  60

When to sow outside:  2 to 4 weeks before average last frost, when soil temperature is at least 50°F for early summer crop. 6 to 8 weeks before first fall frost for late summer/fall crop. Mild Climates: Sow fall through winter.

Harvesting:   For early spring sowings, harvest beets before summer heat. For late summer sowings, harvest before first heavy frost.  Harvest when roots are anywhere from 1″–3″ in diameter. Do not let them get too big; the smaller they are, the more tender.  Greens are most tender when small, so harvest starting when they are 2″ tall. You can take as much as one third of a beet plant’s outer leaves without harming the root crop.
